Moghul Rooms Review – August 2024

A rare trip “up north” for the curry club, as we ventured to Towcester to visit the Moghul Rooms. And even more rare, we were a full house, with all ten members in attendance.
Most of us met up at the Towcester Mill brewery for a pint and, as it was a reasonably warm evening, we enjoyed the last of the late summer sun in the brewery’s lovely beer garden.
Suitably refreshed, we walked over to the restaurant, which is in a characterful old building on the high street (Watling Street) and took up our table up on the first floor. The place was busy, which is always a good sign and the staff were friendly and welcoming.
The menu was very interesting, with a number of different dishes offered, along with some of the usual “curry house standards”. Pops and dips seemed to go down well with the assembled throng. The starters and mains looked nicely presented and most dishes were very well recieved. Service was good and the staff helped us out with a couple of dishes that we couldn’t see on the menu (rashmi kebab and tarka dhal) – these were specially made up for us. Sadly, the dhal was the one weak spot for me; it was a little bland, tasting of garlic but little else. I mentioned this in passing to one of the staff and he immediately took it off the bill, without prompting, which I thought was excellent customer service.
Overall, a fun night in a very good restaurant and I hope to go back for another visit sometime soon.

| Positive | Negative |
|---|---|
| A restaurant with character | Stairs may cause access issues |
| Fair choice of menu especially as they seem willing to give you off-menu choices | Very noisy acoustics, music on but couldn’t hear it |
| Very good service, attentive staff and food came quickly, even though it was very busy | Rooms quite dark |
| Very generous portions | No dress standard for staff |
| Pops dips all ok | Gents ‘tin tray’ toilet not discreet |
| Prawn puree, good tasting prawns, some liked the triangles of puree, some didn’t | Tarka Dhall, special order, bit average and bland |
| Rashmi Kebab, special order, great fresh made, well spiced burger and omelette | Tabaqui Chicken, not a good choice, thick sauce, odd flavour. |
| Moghul mix starter – a pleasant, tasty variety | Parking a bit tricky |
| Chilli Paneer, very spicey | |
| Chicken Pathia, very tasty | |
| Lamb Sizzler, some found it hot, some not hot as expected, but very tasty | |
| Lamb Tikka Masala, tasty, tender and plentiful | |
| Royal Chicken Korma, very tasty, generous portion | |
| Boss Lamb Curry, well presented, good lamb but not spicey at all, even though madras strength requested | |
| Good veggies, recommend Kumb Mutter (chick peas and mushrooms), Saag Aloo and Onion Bhaji | |
| No problems with any rice or naans | |
