Kassia Review – September 2022

Well, this was a new one for the club. Kassia, in Stony Stratford, has been open for 2-3 years but we
hadn’t got around to visiting with the usual olds, such as COVID.
6 club members also took the unusual step of visiting on a Thursday as England were playing in the
world cup on the Friday it would normally have been. We started at the Old George just opposite the
restaurant and after a few drinks, make the huge journey of 30 metres to Kassia.
The first thing we noticed was the warm welcome from the manager – whom we recognised from
the Spice Village. The décor of the restaurant was very modern and very blue and very nice, with a
mixture of round tables, booths and regular tables. We had a round table, which we always like as it
is much easier for all to converse. There were 3 beers on draft: Cobra, Maribu (I think) which is an
Indian amber ale, and Madri which is a spanish beer?!
The menu was not huge, which is often good, and was a mixture of tapas, house specials, and more
traditional curries. The ordering concept is a bit different: you have a sheet with all the dishes and a
tick box and you choose which dishes you want, and then hand the sheet to the waiter. It reminded
me of Chinese dimsum restaurants. Also interesting was that – unless you stated otherwise –
everything came together, tapas, mains, sides, rice, naan. We asked the manager if we could be
more traditional and have the (starter) tapas first and then the mains which, of course, was no
problem. Whilst we perused the menu we ordered plain poppadums’ which were folded rather than
normal round, and were crisp and a delight to eat. The pickle tray was good too – the usual raita,
onion salad and mango chutney, but also a really good and spicy sweet Indian chili sauce.
On the advice of the manager, we ordered 5 tapas between six of us as we were told the dishes
were slightly larger than normal starters. In fact, he added extra onion bhajees and lollipop chicken
to the Kassia fries, keema chicken and sag paneer and also brought out a bang bang cauliflower as a
special from the chef (so actually it was probably 8 tapas!). They were served on a large tray in the
middle of the table and all were extremely good with the probable exception of the lollipop chicken
which was bland compared to the rest. The bang bang cauliflower was a bit of a marmite dish and
was very BBQ sauce flavour in its nature.
The other good thing was between poppadums and tapas and tapas and main, we were asked if we
would like to wait before the food was served or if we were ready. So many times we’ve been to
Indian restaurants and the next course just turns up with no warning often without even clearing
previous dishes and plates away.
The mains were brought with the only (minor) blip in that a chicken jalfrezi and peshwari naan were
brought to the table which we didn’t order. The naan was left but the jalfrezi was whisked away. We
did not go for any vegetable side dishes but opted for 3 various rice and 3 various naans with the
main meat dishes. Everyone at the table said their mains, rice and breads were very good although
some dishes posted as 2 chillies were not as spicy hot as other but nonetheless tasty.

All in all, everyone agreed that the food, service, ambience were very good and all had an enjoyable
evening.
